ABOUT THIS SITE
What is it?
BC Seafood
On-line is a comprehensive reference tool for seafood buyers,
processors and government agencies that has primarily
been developed to document and inventory the make-up of British
Columbia’s seafood industry. A joint venture between several industry and government agencies,
this guide provides:
 |
an up-to-date database of BC’s seafood suppliers
sorted by species, product form, region, markets
and capital investment; |
 |
the latest information
for industry participants and potential investors
to accurately assess new opportunities, and; |
 |
current and specific
information regarding several popular and unique
BC seafood species including photos. |
The guide
is a response to the dramatic changes in the BC seafood business
over the past ten years – change driven by wildly
fluctuating harvests, changes in the product forms demanded by
consumers and increasing popularity of lower profiled species.
This changing mix of species and products has kept the wholesale
value of BC seafood steady but made it difficult for buyers and
processors alike to keep track of the resulting changes.
How can it be used?
This site is invaluable to a wide range of users. For example:
 |
A fresh fish processor could use this site to help
decide whether to expand into filleting and packaging for retail
by obtaining information on existing producers and facilities
through a search by species, product lines and capacity. |
 |
A seafood buyer can use it to obtain
a list of suppliers of major species such as salmon,
halibut and oysters, but also of sea urchin geoduck,
neon flying squid and dogfish. |
 |
A specific seafood buyer such as
a chef, culinary arts instructor or new seafood
enthusiast could obtain current and specific information
regarding how to best buy, store and prepare a
number of species. |
